Ancestors of James Alfred Flack

This section relates specifically to my own Ancestors and their Descendants - on both my Father and Mothers side of the family. A lot of the information here is obviously contained in the searchable database, but you will find some extra items here too that adds to that or explains a little more.

On My Fathers Side

Holy Trinity Church, Balsham.

Henry Flack was born about 1566, possibly in/near Balsham, Cambridgeshire, England.

Henry Flack was married to Ann (Unknown) and they had 4 children - Aaron, Henry, John and Agnes.

Children Aaron and Henry were born in Balsham, Cambridgeshire, while John and Agnes were born in West Wickham, Cambridgeshire.

Lots of people have helped so far with this particular descendants tree - but I would single out 3 people in particular to say 'thank you' to:-

1st is Bruce Frost (husband of my second cousin Margaret Hilda Chapman) - as he kindly provided the Lions share of this line of Flack Ancestors when I first started my research. Taking me all the way up to James Flack and Avice Willis. James was born 1698 in Balsham, Cambridgeshire, England.

2nd is Denise Carr (my web partner at www.flackgenealogy.com who recently added another 4 generations backwards to my now oldest Flack ancester - Henry Flack.

3rd is Olive Carter (my Mother). When I first started on my Family Tree, my mother said she couldn't help a lot really - but she'd try. But then she proceeded to reel of literally Hundreds of names on both sides of the family. Then we sat and looked through some photo albulms and she reeled off hundreds more. I do have to say that my mother (even at 79) has a better memory than large handfuls of computer RAM modules.
SO THANKS MUM.

Although this particular section is about my Oldest Flack Ancestors (Henry and Ann) and their Descendants - it is worth noting that at least other (currently) seperate Flack Families can be linked into THIS tree through various marriages.

The 23 Flack Heads are as follows:-

  1. Ambrose Flack b.1655, possibly Little Welnetham, Suffolk.
  2. Ambrose Flack b.1739, possibly Wendons Ambo, Essex.
  3. Ambrose Flack b.1748, possibly West Wratting, Cambridgeshire.
  4. Henry Flack b.1566, possibly Balsham, Cambridgeshire.
  5. Henry Flack b.1700, possibly Hundon, Suffolk.

This page gives links to the 23 seperate family 'Heads'.

I am in the process of putting together an interactive diagram so its easy to see where all the different families link in together.

I've made a start with the Diagram HERE.

The 1st page is dynamic - but onclick any box and it takes you to a static image. I have to make all the pages interactive - but its very time consuming and I have to try to get the rest of the main website finished first.

These Flack families link together through the Backler, Barker, Bell, Burling, Brown, Churchman, Flitton, Hyner, Ison, Mallyon, Manning, Mansfield, Mynott, Preston and Shipp families.

I hope you find this particular tree usesfull (it stretches for miles at times if you go sideways as well).

If you can add anything to it, or correct it in any way, then I would be most happy to hear from you.

On My Mothers Side

Durham Cathedral, County Durham.
("Land of Princes and Bishops")

My mother is a 'CARTER' by birth and so far I have managed to trace the Carter side of the family back to Richard Carter born about 1786 in West Auckland, County Durham.

My Great Grandfather (Robinson Carter b.1855) married Mariah Bessant, and I must admit I've had much more luck tracing the Bessant leg of the family rather than the Carter one.

With the help of Mary Mason and her website The Bessants of Gordano I have managed to go back to the South West of England and John Bessant born about 1688 in Weston in Gordano, Somerset.

Family Books

There are 2 books online written by older family members which are well worth a read.

The first book called Down Memories Lane
By Maria Jane Carter - written 31st July 1950.

Maria recalls her early life in Witton Park, County Durham - circa 1890-1920.

She writes in detail about her Childhood - her family - and early life in the embryonic Salvation Army.

The second book called:
The Life & Times of Richard Robinson Carter
16/11/1916 - March 2004

Richard writes about his early memories of life and comments on some of the 'significant changes' he has seen from early years.

Most of all though he says that the "The purpose in recording the earlier experiences is to provide for my grandchildren a picture of life as it was in the days of their forbears".

Family Photos

Once I have uploaded all my photos I'll create some albums and link to them from here

The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army has played a huge part in the lives of at least three generations of my family. With my Great Grandfather Robinson Carter being one of William Booths earliest converts, and numerous relatives being Salvation Army Officers at one point or another (including my own father in his early life).

I have included this section The Salvation Army to try and give you an appreciation of what the 'Sally Ann' as its affectionately called is all about.
