Flack Family as of 1908
These are the notes of James Flack "The Historian" preparing
for the 1908 (1st) Flack Family ReUnion.
(kindly copied to me by Carol Temlin - current owner of the documentation)
James Flack came to this county from the North of Ireland somewhere near the
years 1725 or 1728. The Flacks were of Presbyterian faith and most likely were
driven from Scotland at the time of the persecution of the Christians in that
country when numbers of Christians were driven out of Scotland.
An old man living in this town a few years ago told me (James Flack) the Flacks
came from the North of Ireland as he knew a number of them living there before
he left that country for America, and they were Presbyterians as about all have
been in this country that I can recollect.
My grandfather told me that his grandfather came from Ireland and married an
Irish girl and they are the James and Ann Flack you speak of in your letter
to me of August the 5th last.
James Flack dies Sept 2nd 1802, age 94. Ann died March 23rd 1801 age 87. This
said James Flack owned 325 acres and 130 perches of land about two miles South
east of this town (Doylestown) and I see by deed dated Sept. 8th, 1804, the
heirs of James Flack deeded the same 325 acres and 130 perches to Joesph Flack
for a consideration of £3616 or about $9642.66. The heirs signing the
deed were Sarah Mullen, residing in Northumberland County, PA. Robert Flack
and wife Mary, Samuel Flack and wife Mary, James**
Flack and wife Rachel, Jane Flack and John Flack, children of John Flack, Annie
Flack widow of John Flack, Edith Flack, the above were all living in Bucks County
at the time. William Flack residing in Kentucky John H Flack and Annie Flack
residing in Kentucky.
(** Note from me: This is James SON of John. Father John
had died by the time the will was executed, so GRANDSON James attended the signing.
This is NOT the eldest son James).
This John Flack, Annie Flack and Edith Flack were children of Benjamin Flack,
this Benjamin Flack served in the Revolutionary Army 1776 to 1777. I see by
the Penn Archives James Flack left a will dated 1793 in which he left to his
wife Ann Flack, £25 per year, the residue he left to his children in equal
shares except he left two shares to Joseph who settled his estate, one share
going to Benjamin's children, he also left Edith £10. each share when
divided amounted to £516:12s:8p:1 farthing.
James Flack, sons Joseph and Samuel owned 49 acres in this town, part of it
I now own and reside. (E. Ashland Street, Doylestown, at Pine Street.)
As far as I can learn Joseph kept a store and Samuel kept a hotel in this place
about the time of the Revolutionary War. At the time of his keeping hotel here
Samuel had a child to die and they could hardly find anyone to go with him to
Neshaminy Burying ground to enter it in the family burial lot so that only three
or four went including one woman and they all went on horseback. The neighbours
being very much agitated at the time at the account of Washingtons Army being
in sight of the cemetery and the British this side of Philadelphia and were
expecting trouble any time from the two armies coming together and from outlaws
roaming through the Country.
